The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) Review

Ed and Lorraine Warren are back at it again with a demonic case! The Conjuring Universe has gained a massive following among horror fans for it’s amazing first 2 Conjuring movies, with also the Annabelle series, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona. The 3rd film is set in 1981 during the mysterious murder trial in Brookfield, Conneticut, and is the first Conjuring film not to be directed by James Wan. Does it live up to the same hype of the other 2 films? Let’s Dive In!

First of all, Ed and Lorraine are probably one of the best horror film couples I’ve seen in a long time. Every movie that involves the 2 of them, you believe that they’re a loving couple who want to help crack any case involving some kind of paranormal activity. In this movie, there’s definitely still that feel. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson do such an amazing job together, and really carry this franchise on their backs.

Arne Johnson, played by Ruairi O’Connor, does a nice job in this performance as well. He’s clearly a nice guy who wanted to sacrifice himself to save some and you start to see the consequences of his actions. The whole experience of what he was saw and felt when committing the murder has us feel a bit of sympathy for him and how he was able to try to cope with the crime he committed and any other demons he was battling after the fact as well. His girlfriend Debbie and her little brother are also very well done performances. You can feel that they have been completely traumatized by this whole situation, but you completely understand why they are supporting him through all of this.

You can tell James Wan didn’t direct this though, because some of the scares don’t connect very well in this movie. James Wan was a master class in making sure every scare was a real one. This movie had too many false scares for a Conjuring movie, and there were a couple of times where I watched it that I felt kind of disappointed in what they were trying to build up to. With that said though, there’s still some pretty good jump scares. There’s a couple of scenes in the film that really caught me off guard with stuff unexpectedly appearing in the background or a loud sound that comes out of nowhere. The reactions to the horror from the actors are also pretty good as well. Whether they’re being chased, or see something that really shouldn’t be happening, their reactions to them were believable.

I give this movie a lot of credit though for trying to build a good story out of something as narrow as the Devil in Connecticut trial, and honestly there were some twists in this movie that kind of caught me off guard. An hour into the movie I thought I had everything figured out, but then it through a curve ball that I didn't even think of or see coming. That’s exactly what you want in a mystery movie, especially a horror mystery movie. You don’t want anyone to expect everything, otherwise what’s the point of watching it? This made the climax all the more interesting, and I was on the edge of my seat by the time they cracked the case.

Although it’s not as good as the 1st 2 Conjuring movies, I still feel this is a solid horror mystery movie. I do recommend it for fans of the Conjuring Universe, and those who are into horror mysteries. This is definitely a paranormal case that deserves to possess your attention.

Final Verdict: 7 out of 10
